Cluster randomised trial
We will deliver the intervention in consultant led pre-operative assessment clinics in forty NHS hospitals. Hospitals will be randomised in a 1:1 ratio to the decision support intervention or their pre-existing practice in decision making and consent.
Patients consulting a doctor in hospitals randomised to use of the intervention will be asked to input their views about the long-term outcomes of surgery into the decision support intervention. This will provide an output from the intervention which the doctor will use to structure the shared decision making conversation. Doctors in control hospitals will continue their existing practice.
